beta-lactamase production Haemophilus spp. and resistance to ampicillin in a general hospital in Porto Alegre city, RS, Brazil (2001-2005) BJID
Ferreira,Jorge A. S.; Castro,Andréa Cauduro de; Rocha,Marion P.; Riboldi,Gustavo; d'Azevedo,Pedro Alves.
In a four-year period (July/2001-June/2005), 410 Haemophilus spp. isolates were studied. Those were isolated from sputum at Hospital Nossa Senhora da Conceição (NSC) in Porto Alegre city (RS). beta-lactamase enzyme was detected in 113 (27.6%) of isolates through chromogenic cephalosporin method. Fifty-eight (51.3%) of them showed sensibility to ampicillin through disc-diffusion method using Haemophilus Test Medium (HTM) by NCCLS criteria. In 297 (72.4%) isolates beta-lactamase was not detected by chromogenic cephalosporin method. Five (1.7%) of them were resistant and 1 (0.3%) intermediate to ampicillin using disc-diffusion method. The authors emphasized the importance of Haemophilus spp. resistance to ampicillin research in clinical laboratories routine...

Concentração mínima inibitória de dez antimicrobianos para amostras de Staphylococcus aureus isoladas de infecção intramamária bovina Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Brito,M.A.V.P.; Brito,J.R.F.; Silva,M.A.S.; Carmo,R.A..

Conventional versus molecular tests (Multiplex PCR and PCR mecA gene) for detection of methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus BJM
Ribas,Rosineide Marques; Gontijo-Filho,Paulo Pinto; Darini,Ana Lúcia da Costa.
In this study, for detection of methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA), a mecA multiplex PCR-based amplification was compared with the 1 µg oxacillin disk diffusion test, detection of minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC), and screening in agar with 4% NaCl and 6 µg/mL oxacillin. Among 24 isolates obtained from blood, mecA gene was detected in only 16 (66.7%) isolates by multiplex PCR. The MIC test showed a range of resistance to oxacillin from 0.19 to 512 µg/mL, among these isolates. Data obtained by screening and dilution tests showed that sensitivity to methicillin was 80.0% and 72.8%, respectively, when compared with the presence of mecA gene (multiplex). All isolates, including the negatives, when revaluated for mecA gene by PCR were positive....

Correlation of phenotypic tests with the presence of the blaZ gene for detection of beta-lactamase BJM
Ferreira,Adriano Martison; Martins,Katheryne Benini; Silva,Vanessa Rocha da; Mondelli,Alessandro Lia; Cunha,Maria de Lourdes Ribeiro de Souza da.
Abstract Staphylococcus aureus and Staphylococcus saprophyticus are the most common and most important staphylococcal species associated with urinary tract infections. The objective of the present study was to compare and to evaluate the accuracy of four phenotypic methods for the detection of beta-lactamase production in Staphylococcus spp. Seventy-three strains produced a halo with a diameter ≤28 mm (penicillin resistant) and all of them were positive for the blaZ gene. Among the 28 susceptible strain (halo ≥29 mm), 23 carried the blaZ gene and five did not. The zone edge test was the most sensitive (90.3%), followed by MIC determination (85.5%), but the specificity of the former was low (40.0%). The nitrocefin test was the least sensitive (28.9%)....

Extended-spectrum beta-lactamase production among ampicillin-resistant Escherichia coli strains from chicken in Enugu State, Nigeria BJM
Chah,K.F.; Oboegbulem,S.I..
One hundred and seventy-two ampicillin-resistant E. coli strains isolated from commercial chickens in Enugu State, Nigeria, were screened for beta-lactamase production using the broth method with nitrocefin® as the chromogenic cephalosporin to detect enzyme production. Beta-lactamase producing strains were further examined for extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL) production using the Oxoid combination discs method. One hundred and seventy (98.8%) of the 172 ampicillin-resistant E. coli strains produced beta-lactamase enzyme. Sixteen (9.4%) beta-lactamase producers were phenotypically confirmed to produce ESBLs. Six of the ESBL producing strains were only detected with ceftazidime versus ceftazidime/clavulanate combination while ten of the ESBL producers...

Incidence and transferability of antibiotic resistance in the enteric bacteria isolated from hospital wastewater BJM
Alam,Mohammad Zubair; Aqil,Farrukh; Ahmad,Iqbal; Ahmad,Shamim.
This study reports the occurrence of antibiotic resistance and production of β-lactamases including extended spectrum beta-lactamases (ESβL) in enteric bacteria isolated from hospital wastewater. Among sixty-nine isolates, tested for antibiotic sensitivity, 73.9% strains were resistant to ampicillin followed by nalidixic acid (72.5%), penicillin (63.8%), co-trimoxazole (55.1%), norfloxacin (53.6%), methicillin (52.7%), cefuroxime (39.1%), cefotaxime (23.2%) and cefixime (20.3%). Resistance to streptomycin, chloramphenicol, nitrofurantoin, tetracycline, and doxycycline was recorded in less than 13% of the strains. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) showed a high level of resistance (800-1600 µg/mL) to one or more antibiotics. Sixty three (91%)...
